Does the Anthropocene end with a bang, or a fizz?
How much time do we have?
It is hard to imagine the scale of our humanness and so much that is at stake.
My paintings show a fascination for the materiality of the gesture. The paintings are developed over months as I nuture its constrant metamorphosis, in a search for moments when everything comes together in gesture. I document the raw and living energy of painting..
A concept I think about lately is the notion of “becoming animal” developed by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari in their book: Thousand Plateaus: Capitalism and Schizophrenia, which offers an alternative to the oppositional relationship between the animal and the human; instead as a symbiosis. Deleuze suggests that we should think of the relationship between animals and humans as contagious, an epidemic, or how he expresses it, an agency. Agency is a word that emphasises, more than the type of linkage, the potential of such relation to a projection towards becoming, towards the transformation of self with and through the other throughout time. It is in this sense that one uses the concept of relational ontology to emphasise the existing relation between the human and the non- human.
